Located at the end of Pier Avenue in the heart of Hermosa Beach, the 1,000-foot pier might be most popular for its pristine views North to Malibu and South to Long Beach. Whether you’re out with the family, cruising with a group of friends, or with someone special, the pier is a great spot. It is a casual place to catch the sunset and spend some time relaxing or people watching. Along with its beautiful surrounding beach, the simplicity of the Hermosa Beach Pier is highlighted by all of the surrounding activities. You can catch a decent wave, get involved in some beach volleyball, stroll over to the lively retail area, or just connect to The Strand to run, walk, or pedal your way along the beach.
If you’re on the lookout for some food or entertainment, the base of the Hermosa Beach Pier is also home to some of the most popular restaurants and nightlife in South Bay. From pubs and cantinas to more upscale lounges, check out the options on Yelp.com and Urban Spoon.
If you prefer to check things out online first, you can find a live webcam of the beach here, or check out the water and wave conditions for surfing at Watchthewater.org.
The first version of the Hermosa Beach Pier, [built in 1904http://www.hermosabch.org/index.aspx?page=42], was made entirely of wood and stretched 500 feet into the ocean before it washed away in 1913. A second pier, twice the size and made of concrete and asphalt, was then constructed in 1914.
